- Biographical Description
-
Gin was a Black woman who lived in Franklin, Somerset County, New Jersey, in the early 19th century. She was enslaved by Abraham Voorhees. A birth certificate for her daughter Rachel, born in 1806, has been found among Somerset County records.
Note that there was an enslaver named Abraham Voorhees who submitted a birth certificate in nearby Bridgewater township for a baby born to a woman named Gin in 1805. There is a possibility that this is the same Gin (and the same Abraham Voorhees who may have moved from Bridgewater to Franklin), but this connection has not been confirmed. - Keywords
