- Biographical Description

George Mitchell was an enslaver and merchant who had lived in St. Croix during the American Revolution. In the 1780s, he returned to America and settled in the City of Burlington, New Jersey. The following biographical notation about George Mitchell and his wife was provided by the editors of the Papers of Alexander Hamilton in connection with a letter from Hugh Knox to Alexander Hamilton, sent on 27 October 1783, which mentioned "Mr. & Mrs. Mitchell":
"George Mitchell and his wife, Ann Venton Mitchell. Mrs. Mitchell, the daughter of James Lytton and Ann Fawcett Lytton, married John Venton with whom, in 1762, she had gone to New York. In 1770, she returned to St. Croix to claim her share of her father’s estate. In 1780, three years after the death of John Venton, she married George Mitchell, a native of Scotland who had gone to St. Croix from Virginia. Probably in 1783, they returned to America and settled in Burlington, New Jersey. Mrs. Mitchell was H’s [i.e., Alexander Hamilton's] cousin. Her mother was the sister of H’s mother, Rachel Lavien." - Keywords
