Thomas was a Black man who lived in the City of Burlington, New Jersey, in the late 18th century. His date and place of birth is uncertain. In the 1780s, he was enslaved by a merchant named George Mitchell, who came to Burlington from St. Croix circa 1783. Whether Thomas came with Mitchell from St. Croix is unknown.
In April 1786, Samuel Shoemaker, a prominent Quaker politician, bought Thomas from George Mitchell for 25 pounds with the intention of setting him free. Within three weeks, Shoemaker signed and filed manumission documents for Thomas. - Keywords
