Runaway ad for Jack, by John E. Post, "1 Dollar Reward," Centinel of Freedom, March 11, 1823, p. 3.
- Event Description
-
On April 2, 1821, a young Black man named Jack ran away from his enslaver John E. Post, who lived in Bergen Township (around the area of present-day Jersey City). It seems that two years later, Jack was still at large. In March 1823, John E. Post published a runaway ad offering a reward of 1 dollar for Jack's capture and return. The ad noted that Jack was about 21 years old. It is not entirely clear whether this number refers to Jack's age at the time of his escape in 1821 or at the time of the runaway advertisement in 1823.
