On 12 October 1812, David Kirkpatrick Sr. of Bernards township, Somerset County, gave an enslaved man named Dick to his daughter Jennet Kirkpatrick Miller and son-in-law Dickinson Miller. This transfer was done as an advance of Jennet's inheritance, and David Kirkpatrick Sr. deducted $300 from Jennet's inheritance as a result of this gift, noting that this was the monetary value attached to Dick. Dick's age at the time of this transfer is not certain, but based on contextual information it can be inferred that he was a young man of prime working age.
This event was documented in a codicil that David Kirkpatrick Sr. signed, amending his will. His original will was written in 1801 and did not mention Dick; the codicil was added on 12 October 1812, when David Kirkpatrick was 89 years old and was in the process of distributing some of his assets to his children.
The following is a transcript of the relevant section of the codicil: "and to my daughter Jennet (being the sum at which I value my negro man Dick whom I this day give to her husband Dickinson Miller) the sum of three hundred dollars." Subsequent passages clarify that this sum is to be deducted from Jennet's inheritance.
The documents listed Bernards township as the location. David Kirkpatrick Sr. resided in the Mine Brook area of Bernards. - Event Type
