Somerset County Register of Black Children, Manumissions, and Removals, Book A, Page 180, contains a manumission record for Harry, who was released from slavery on 11 April 1816 in Hillsborough. Harry's primary enslaver, Lawrence Van Derveer, was deceased at this time, and the manumission was performed by Henry Brokaw and Henry Van Derveer, who acted on behalf of the estate of Lawrence Van Derveer. The manumission document states that Harry was an adult between 21 and 40 years old, but the exact age was not recorded.
The document was entered into the book by the County Clerk (Samuel Swan) on 16 April 1816. The manumission record was signed by the Overseers of the Poor for the township (Henry Brokaw and Peter D. Vroom) and Justices of the Peace for Somerset County (John H. Disborough and David Nevius). - Event Type
