Somerset County Register of Black Children, Manumissions, and Removals, Book A, Page 305, contains a manumission record for Caesar, who was released from slavery on 21 April 1823. Caesar was manumitted by David Kirkpatrick Jr., who lived in the area of Mine Brook in Bernards township. The manumission document states that Caesar was 38 years old at the time of this event.
The document was entered into the book by the County Clerk (Isaac Southard) on 7 February 1824. The manumission record was signed by the Overseers of the Poor for the township (John McMurtrey and John Parsells) and Justices of the Peace for Somerset County (William Van Deren and Thomas Whitenack).
The certificate of manumission appears on p. 305 and was recorded on 26 May 1823. The deed of manumission signed by David Kirkpatrick (and witnessed by his sons Walter and Hugh) appears on p. 320 and was recorded on 7 February 1824.
