- Description

Marlton is the historical name of a village in Evesham Township, Burlington County, New Jersey. European settlement in the area began in the late 17th century. By the early 19th century, the village was commonly referred to as Marlton, but it was never incorporated as a separate municipality under that name. Rather, Marlton remained one of several settlements within Evesham. For this reason, slavery-era documents for the area are typically filed under Evesham Township, and researchers of slavery in Marlton will want to review Evesham records.
Evesham Township was originally about four times larger than it is today, but it began to splinter in the 19th century. By the late 19th century, Medford and Mount Laurel broke off from Evesham. The remaining portion of Evesham Township was centered on the village of Marlton. For this reason, the names Evesham and Marlton became virtually interchangeable in the modern era. Evesham remains the official name of the municipality, but Marlton is seen on many maps, road signs, and institutions in the area. - Locality
