- Description
-
Barbarroux Wharf was one of the two main wharves located in Burlington, New Jersey, at the turn of the 19th century. It was located at the foot of Talbot Street. A shipyard was established here as early as 1698, and vessels sailed from here to all parts of the world throughout the 18th century.
The wharf became known as Barbarroux Wharf in the 1790s, after a wealthy Frenchman named Jean Andre Barbarroux moved to Burlington and acquired the property along the riverfront. His home was near the wharf. Barbarroux was the owner of several large coffee plantations in Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), where he exploited slave labor extensively. During the slave revolt that turned into the Haitian Revolution, Barbarroux and his family fled to New Jersey and settled in Burlington. He brought with him several enslaved people from Saint-Domingue, and these people may have worked on the Barbarroux Wharf.
A 1797 map, called "A Plan of the Island of Burlington and a View of the City from the River Delaware," by W. Birch, displays the location of Barbarroux Wharf and includes an image of a vessel docked there. - Locality
