- Description
-
Hopewell is a township in Cumberland County, originally formed as one of the six precincts when the county was created in 1748. Its boundaries stayed fairly stable throughout its history, but several small territories were given to the surrounding municipalities since the mid-19th century. Hopewell ceded some land to Greenwich and Cohansey townships in 1845 and 1848, respectively. In 1929, Shiloh Borough was formed from parts of Hopewell and Stow Creek townships.
Hopewell in Cumberland County is not to be confused with the township of the same name that was historically in Hunterdon County and is now part of Mercer County. - Locality
