Matchaponix refers to a loosely defined area in the eastern part of Monroe Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey, near the Matchaponix Brook (the brook serves as the boundary between Monroe Township and Old Bridge Township). Matchaponix is not a separate municipality and has never been incorporated as such. The New Jersey Training School, a juvenile correctional facility, is located in this area on land that once belonged to the Van Wickle family of Matchaponix during the Revolutionary era. The name Matchaponix comes from the Lenape language and predates European settlement of the area.
