- Description

Willingboro is a township in Burlington County, New Jersey, near the Rancocas Creek. It was formed in 1688 and is one of the oldest townships in New Jersey. The spelling of the township's name has shifted over time: originally written as Wellingborrow, then Willingborough, then shortened to Willingboro.
The township was originally about twice as large as it is today and reached to the Delaware River. All of the territory that makes up present-day Delanco, Beverly, and Edgewater Park was originally part of Willingboro. These other municipalities along the Delaware River began to splinter off from Willingboro in the 1850s. Thus, slavery-era records that list Willingboro as the location may actually be referring to places along the Delaware River in modern Delanco, Beverly, or Edgewater Park. - Locality
