Little Egg Harbor is a township in Ocean County, New Jersey. It is located near the Mullica River, which was historically called the Little Egg Harbor River. The township's history is closely tied to Burlington County because this area (the southernmost tip of modern-day Ocean County) belonged to Burlington County until 1891. Thus, documents related to slavery in this area can be found among Burlington County records.
This township was originally established in 1740 in Burlington County from the southern portion of Northampton Township. The township was officially called "Egg Harbour" during the colonial era and was reincorporated as "Little Egg-Harbour" after the American Revolution in 1798. The original territory of the township was significantly larger than it is today and included the modern-day areas of Tuckerton and Long Beach, as well as large portions of Burlington County's modern townships of Bass River and Washington. The Washington Township portion was the first to break away from Little Egg Harbor in 1802, followed by Bass River in 1864. In 1891, the remainder of Little Egg Harbor was transferred to Ocean County, and then Long Beach and Tuckerton broke off at the turn of the 20th century.
Note that there are multiple modern municipalities that have "Egg Harbor" in the name due to their proximity to the Great Egg Harbor (south of Atlantic City) and the Little Egg Harbor (north of Atlantic City). When reviewing slavery-era records, it is important to differentiate between "Egg Harbor, Burlington County" (which refers to the southernmost portions of modern Ocean and Burlington Counties) and the area directly south of it, which was then known as "Great-Egg Harbor, Gloucester County." During the colonial era, Atlantic County did not yet exist, and the entire area of modern-day Atlantic County was known as "Great-Egg Harbor, Gloucester County." - Locality
