Biographical Description
-
A lawyer, judge, and enslaver, Richard Stockton (1730-1781) was born in Princeton in 1730 and built Morven on land gifted to him by his parents. Stockton was elected to the Second Continental Congress and was one of five New Jersey signers of the Declaration of Independence. Stockton married Annis Boudinot around 1757. During the Revolution, Stockton was captured by the British troops, and signed an oath of allegiance to the King to secure his release. Afterwards, he was made to appear before the New Jersey Committee of Safety to sign an oath of abjuration back to the American cause.
This biographical note was adapted from the Morven Museum and Garden permanent exhibit text.
