Somerset County birth records of enslaved children contain a birth certificate for Catharine (commonly called Kate), daughter of Nancy, born on 14 September 1804. Catharine's enslaver was Richard Stockton, known as "the Duke," from Princeton, New Jersey. Dr. Ebenezer Stockton provided medical services during the delivery, as documented in his medical register.
Born shortly after the 1804 Act for the Gradual Abolition of Slavery went into effect, Catherine would be deemed a "slave for a term" and would be eligible for emancipation in 1825, after serving her mother's master for 21 years. - Keywords
