Tubel Leake was a Black boy who was born into slavery in Deerfield, Cumberland County, in the late 18th century. His father was Jack Leake, and his mother was probably Jack's wife Hannah. Tubel had at least three brothers: George, John, and Thomas. Tubel and his family were enslaved in the household of Nathan and Hannah Fithian Leake, and they took on the last name Leake from this white family.
Nathan Leake died in 1790 and freed Tubel's father, Jack, by his will. Jack then purchased Tubel so he could free him, paying the sum of 20 pounds to Nathan Leake's widow, Hannah Fithian Leake, and son, David Leake, in several installments from 1791 to 1793. Tubel's age at the time of these events is uncertain, but it appears that he was a child at that time. - Keywords
