George Leake was born into slavery in Deerfield, Cumberland County, in the late 18th century. His father was Jack Leake, and his mother was probably Jack's wife Hannah. George had brothers Tubel, John, and Thomas. George and his family were enslaved in the household of Nathan Leake and Hannah Fithian Leake, and they took on the last name Leake from this white family.
Nathan Leake died in 1790 and freed George's father, Jack, by his will. Jack then bought George's freedom, paying Nathan Leake's executors in installments over several years. Nathan Leake's widow, Hannah Fithian Leake, and son, David Leake, declared George to be free from the date of April 18, 1793. The freedom price of George's brother Tubel was paid off at the same time. - Keywords
