Thomas Leake was a Black boy born circa 1803, the son of Jack Leake and Hannah Leake. Thomas's parents had both been enslaved in the household of Nathan Leake Esq of Deerfield, Cumberland County, but they were both free by the time that Thomas was born. Thomas had older brothers George, Tubel, and John, all of whom had been born into slavery and gained freedom over time through various arrangements with the heirs of Nathan Leake. See the biographical profiles for Thomas's parents for documentation about their efforts to free their family from slavery over two decades.
Thomas is the first documented person in his family to be born free. Thomas grew up in Deerfield, but by 1814, his father was a resident of Greenwich Township, Cumberland County. That year, when Thomas turned 11 years old, he was bound out as an indentured servant to Samuel and Ruth Thompson for a 10-year term. Thomas would serve the Thompsons in Deerfield until he was 21 years old. He would be taught to read and write and would receive 20 dollars and a new suit of clothes when his term ended at age 21. - Keywords
