- Biographical Description
- Fanny Pursue was a black woman who was born circa 1799. She was born into slavery and was raised in the household of a Quaker woman named Mercy English in Burlington, Burlington County, New Jersey. When Mercy English died in August 1820, Fanny Pursue was about 21 years old. Within weeks of Mercy English's death, Mercy's heirs (her three sons, two daughters, and two sons-in-law) collectively sold Fanny Pursue to Rowland Jones for the nominal price of 50 cents, bidding Rowland Jones to set Fanny Pursue free as soon as possible. In other words, the English children allowed Rowland Jones to buy Fanny Pursue's freedom, probably at the instructions of their deceased mother Mercy English.
