- Biographical Description
- Dan was a black boy born circa 1771. In the 1780s, he was enslaved in the household of Francis Hopkinson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence from New Jersey, and his wife Ann Hopkinson née Borden. Documents related to Dan place him in Philadelphia. The Hopkinsons maintained a residence in Philadelphia and another home in Bordentown, New Jersey, and it is possible that Dan would have spent time at their home in Bordentown while they were there.
