- Biographical Description
- Violet was a black woman born circa 1750. In the 1780s, she was enslaved in the household of Francis Hopkinson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence from New Jersey, and his wife Ann Hopkinson née Borden. Documents related to Violet place her in Philadelphia. The Hopkinsons maintained a residence in Philadelphia and another home in Bordentown, New Jersey, and it is possible that Violet would have spent time at their home in Bordentown while they were there.
