John Woolman was a prominent Quaker abolitionist who lived in Burlington County, New Jersey, during the colonial era. He was born in Rancocas in 1720 and spent most of his life in the Mount Holly area (this area was known as Northampton Township in that era). He tirelessly advocated for eradicating slavery among his fellow Quakers in North America and in England. In 1754, he published an influential anti-slavery pamphlet titled "Considerations on the Keeping of Negroes: Recommended to the Professors of Christianity of Every Denomination." He died in 1772 while he was on a trip to England to advocate for abolition.
He was influential in the life of a black Quaker named William Boen, who was also from the same area of Burlington County. - Keywords
