- Biographical Description
-
James B. Caldwell was a white resident of Deptford, Glocester County, New Jersey, at the turn of the 19th century. He filed manumission documents for a Black woman named Rose in 1803, on the authority given to him by Rose's primary legal owner Solomon Combs. Whether James B. Caldwell ever employed Rose in his own household or was merely acting as a legal representative to facilitate the manumission is unclear from the document transcript.
In the 1797 tax ratables for Deptford, James B. Caldwell is listed as the owner of 1 slave.
He was also a Justice of the Peace for Gloucester County and, in that official role, certified some manumission documents presented by other residents of the county. - Keywords
