- Biographical Description
- Rose was a Black woman, born circa 1770, who lived in New Jersey and was enslaved by Solomon Combs. It is uncertain where exactly she lived during her service to Solomon Combs. In 1798, Solomon Combs and a man named John Lawrence (resident of Deptford, Gloucester County) signed an indenture agreement that said Rose would serve John Lawrence for several years, and then she would be set free. Upon the expiration of this indenture agreement in 1803, Rose was manumitted as the indenture agreement instructed. The manumission paperwork, however, was not filed by Solomon Combs or John Lawrence. It was filed by a man named James B. Caldwell, another resident of Deptford, who signed the manumission deed under the authority given to him by Solomon Combs in Rose's indenture agreement. James B. Caldwell's role in Rose's life is not entirely clear. Rose may have served the remainder of her service term in his household after serving John Lawrence for a while or, alternatively, Caldwell may have been acting as an agent on behalf of Solomon Combs to make sure that Combs's promise to Rose would be carried out.
