- Biographical Description
- Marinda Holland, also called Rin, was a Black woman who lived in Gloucester County, New Jersey. She was born into slavery circa 1794 in the household of Joseph Blackwood Esq. In 1800, when she was about 6 years old, Joseph Blackwood sold her to his son Samuel Blackwood, and Marinda then served Samuel and his wife, Rebecca Blackwood. By 1815, Samuel Blackwood passed away, and then Rebecca Blackwood also died. Following Rebecca Blackwood's death, Marinda was manumitted by the administrator of Rebecca Blackwood's estate, Joseph O. Clark. At the time of her manumission, Marinda Holland was 21 years old, the earliest age eligible for manumission under New Jersey law. The manumission took place in Deptford.
