- Biographical Description
-
Publius Vergillius Marr was a Black boy born to an enslaved mother in the household of David Sheppard in Cumberland County. He was born in 1806. His mother's name is uncertain. Two women of childbearing age were enslaved in David Sheppard's household when the boy was born, Juno and Violet, and one of them may have been the mother of Publius Vergillius Marr. His enslaver had properties in Bridgeton and Fairfield Township.
The name "Publius Vergillius Marr," as it was recorded on the boy's birth certificate, derives from the ancient Roman poet Virgil, whose full name is usually written as Publius Vergilius Maro. - Keywords
