- Biographical Description
-
Ager was a Black girl born to an enslaved mother in the household of David Sheppard in Cumberland County. Her enslaver had properties in Bridgeton and Fairfield Township.
She was born in 1813, and her name was recorded as "Agur" on her birth certificate, and her mother was recorded as "Juno." Under New Jersey's gradual abolition law, she had the status of a slave for a term of 21 years, and then she would become eligible for emancipation. When David Sheppard died in 1827, his son Ercuries L. Sheppard inherited a person whose name was recorded as "Jane alias Ager Welsh." This is presumed to be the same girl. - Keywords
