- Description
-
This document is a single page with a list of Black people residing in Northampton, Burlington County, provided to Robert Smith Jr of the New Jersey Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery. The list appears to enumerate both free and enslaved people, but does not explicitly note the freedom status of each person. Some lines list a dollar amount representing the family's "worth in dollars," i.e., the estimated property that the family holds, with William Boen and wife being the most prosperous, with a worth of $300. Most lines do not list an amount. Some people are listed by first name only, while others include a last name. Only one line mentions the name of an enslaver associated with the person ("Primos slave to L. Rosel").
The report is undated. Other documents in the same file suggest that the society collected these reports circa 1797–1798.
The abbreviation "do" (for ditto) was used throughout the document, referring to a repetition of words from the preceding line. The intended words have been entered into the transcript in [brackets]. - Transcript
