- Description
-
Cumberland County historian Carl L. West reviewed government records at the Cumberland County Courthouse in Bridgeton, New Jersey, and transcribed information from certain documents pertaining to slavery. West found these documents in the "Miscellaneous" Series, in Books A, B, C, and D. Most of the documents are certificates of manumission, and one is a report of the births of three children. West compiled this information into a 6-page typewritten document titled "Slavery in Cumberland County, New Jersey." The document is undated; it appears to be from the late 20th century, when West was in charge of the Cumberland County Historical Society's library.
West's transcripts were reproduced as an appendix in the report "Slavery and the Underground Railroad in Cumberland County, New Jersey," by Ian Hughes, which is on file at the Cumberland County Historical Society in Greenwich.
West's transcripts were reviewed by the New Jersey Slavery Records team on-site at the Cumberland County Historical Society in 2025. The team is now in the process of adding the data from these transcripts to the NJSR database and cross-referencing these records with other documents from Cumberland County. - Language
