In May 1761, the Philadelphia mercantile firm Willing, Morris, and Company advertised the sale of three Black people, a man and two boys, brought recently from Barbados aboard the ship William and Mary. The sale would take place at Daniel Cooper's Ferry across the Delaware River in New Jersey, where the captives were being kept after disembarking from the ship. The location of Daniel Cooper's ferry terminal is now Federal Street on the waterfront in Camden. In the 18th century, this area was known as Cooper's Ferry and was part of Newton Township.
