-
The following manumission record from Gloucester County was transcribed by the Historical Records Survey Project of the Works Progress Administration. The transcript was originally published in 1940 in the book titled Transcriptions of Early County Records of New Jersey: Gloucester County Series Slave Documents. The transcript is reproduced below as it appeared in that book.
According to the transcript, a notation on the reverse side of the manumission certificate said "Manumission of Wm. Taylers Slave." However, note that the text of the actual certificate from 1789 and the related affidavit notarized in 1791 do not mention a William Tayler/Taylor. The manumission was performed and signed by Susannah Taylor.
