- Event Description
-
The memoirs of Black Quaker William Boen, published after his death, indicate that he was admitted to membership in the Mount Holly Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends in 1814. He was a devout Quaker for decades prior to this. He had originally applied for membership circa 1763, when he was first transitioning from slavery to freedom, but he was denied. It took half a century before he was allowed to become a member.
See page 17:
"In 1814, he was, on application, received into membership with us, and continued to the last, when able, a steady attender of our meetings, both for worship and discipline." - Event Type
