The New Jersey Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery created a report enumerating free and enslaved Black people in the township of Evesham, Burlington County, New Jersey. The report is undated. Other documents in the same file suggest that the society collected these reports circa 1797–1798.
The report enumerates 81 free Black people, of whom 28 are listed by name, and the remainder are their household members. The total of 81 includes 12 minors who are living in different households throughout the township as apprentices.
The report further enumerates 6 enslaved people, of whom 4 are listed by name and 2 are unnamed family members of a man named Tobe (presumably his wife and child). Below the names of the enslaved people, the report includes this note: "Several of the above are so far free, as to go when they please." This indicates that some of the enslaved people in Evesham township had considerable autonomy in terms of their movement through the community. - Event Type
