Report of Blacks in Chester Township, 1797. Archival location: Burlington County Historical Society. Abolition Collection (MSS 5). Box 1, Folder 1: Negroes Census Records.
- Event Description
-
In 1797, the New Jersey Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery created a report enumerating free and enslaved Black people in the township of Chester, Burlington County, New Jersey.
The report counted 10 enslaved people. The enslaved people's names were not recorded. Instead, the "Slaves" side of the report listed the names of 8 white men who held 1 to 2 Black people in bondage in their household.
The enumerator used non-standard phonetic spellings for some of the names on the list. Based on known family names in the Chester area in the late 18th century, "Scank" refers to the Schank family and "Hulings" is presumed to be Hewlings.
The following is a complete transcript of the "Slaves" column from this report:
"Slaves
John Bispham 1
John Scank 2
Richard Edwards 1
Abraham Hulings 1
Wiliam Foster 1
John Cox 2
John Earl 1
Hezekiah Toy 1" - Event Type
