- Event Description
-
The abstract of the estate inventory of Daniel Cooper indicates that he held four Black people in slavery in his household at the time of his death in 1715.
The following is the text of the abstract as it appears in the New Jersey Calendar of Wills, Vol. 1:
"1715 March 30. Cooper, Daniel, of Gloucester Co. Inventory of the personal estate of, £451.12.4 1/2, incl. three male and one female negro slaves £140.-, one servant woman's time £6.-, bills and book debts, £55.8.-; made by John Kaighin and John Kay; attested by Sarah Cooper."
The inventory was filed in Gloucester County. Daniel Cooper was the owner of Cooper's Ferry in what is now Camden City in Camden County. In 1715, this area was part of Newton Township, Gloucester County, hence why the inventory lists that county. - Event Type
