Event Description
The New Jersey Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery created a report enumerating Black people who lived in Burlington, Burlington County, New Jersey. The report is undated. Other documents in the same file suggest that the society collected these reports circa 1797–1798.

The report enumerated free and enslaved people in separate columns. This Registration event compiles data about the Black people listed in the column titled "Free Amaricans" on the left side of the report. See also two related events (linked below) for data about the English-speaking and Francophone enslaved people, who were listed separately in the same document.

The report contains 28 names of free Black people. Only one name per family group was written on the report. For married couples, this is the husband's name, and the majority of the names on the list are men's names. Four women are listed by name. Each line notes whether the person was single, married, and whether there were children in the household, listed as "mail" or "femail" by the scribe. In total, we counted 67 free people in this report, 24 men, 12 women (including the unnamed wives), and 31 children (14 boys and 17 girls). Note that the scribe who compiled the Burlington report used highly idiosyncratic spellings, and the author's handwriting was less neat than the other reports received by the New Jersey Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery. The New Jersey Slavery Records team has attempted to decipher as many names as possible, but some unusual spellings and errors of transcription are sure to persist.
