In 1797, the New Jersey Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery created a report enumerating free and enslaved Black people in the township of Chester, Burlington County, New Jersey.
The "Free" side of the report listed 13 names: 9 individual men and 4 who had families. Each name on the list is followed by a number, which represents the number of people counted for that household. In total, the report enumerated 23 free Black people.
The enumerator used non-standard phonetic spellings for some of the names on the list. The name listed here as "Coperthwait" / "Copperthwait" is more often written as Cowperthwaite (or Cowperthwait) in the historical records for this township.
