Report of Blacks in Evesham and Egg Harbour

Report of Blacks in Evesham and Egg Harbour. Archival location: Burlington County Historical Society. Abolition Collection (MSS 5). Box 1, Folder 1: Negroes Census Records.
- Event Description
-
The New Jersey Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery created a report enumerating free and enslaved Black people in the township of Evesham, Burlington County, New Jersey. The report is undated. Other documents in the same file suggest that the society collected these reports circa 1797–1798.
Most of the Black people living in Evesham at this time were free. The report enumerates 6 enslaved people, of whom 4 are listed by name, and 2 are unnamed family members of a man named Tobe (presumably his wife and child). Below the names of the enslaved people, the report includes this note: "Several of the above are so far free, as to go when they please." This indicates that some of the enslaved people in Evesham township had considerable autonomy in terms of their movement through the community. - Event Type
