Biographical Description
Thomas McDowell was a resident of Middlesex County, New Jersey. He served as the Overseer of the Poor of South Brunswick in the early 19th century. In this official capacity, he issued manumission certificates for residents of South Brunswick whose enslavers agreed to set them free. Middlesex County records indicate that Thomas McDowell was an enslaver.

He was one of the executors of the estate of his father-in-law David Williamson of South Brunswick and, on behalf of the estate, in 1799 he sold a woman named Lydia to Professor John Mclean Sr. of Princeton University (then called the College of New Jersey).

Thomas McDowell was the son of Andrew McDowell and Isabel Little. This first wife was Catherine Lott, and his second wife was Mary Williamson Thompson (daughter of the aforementioned David Williamson and widow of George Thompson).
