- Biographical Description
-
George was an enslaved man who lived in South Brunswick, New Jersey, in the early 19th century. He was supposed to be set free by the last will and testament of enslaver Isaac Van Dike (Van Dyke) who died in 1803.
On April 9, 1804, Matthew Van Dike (Van Dyke), the executor of the estate of Isaac Van Dike, obtained a certificate of manumission for George.
Seven years later, on April 8, 1811, Matthew Van Dike obtained another certificate of manumission for George on behalf of the estate of Isaac Van Dike. Both certificates stated that George was aged 21 to 40 at the time of manumission.
George's date of birth is not known. It is unclear from the documents why two separate certificates were issued for George, and thus it is unclear when exactly George attained freedom. - Keywords
