- Biographical Description
- Thomas was an enslaved man who lived in New Jersey in the early 19th century. He was married to an enslaved woman named Hannah. Both Thomas and Hannah were enslaved to Dr. Melanthon Freeman (1746-1806) of Piscataway, NJ. The last will and testament of Melanthon Freeman stated that both Thomas and Hannah should be liberated. In December 1807 (over a year after Melanthon Freeman died), the executors of Dr. Freeman's estate completed the manumission process for Thomas by obtaining a certificate of manumission signed by two Overseers of the Poor of Piscataway and two Justices of the Peace of Middlesex County. A certificate of manumission for Thomas's wife Hannah has not been found in the Middlesex County Book of Manumissions and Removals.
