Joe was an enslaved man who lived in Woodbridge, New Jersey. He was manumitted by Samuel Cutter, who issued a deed of manumission for Joe in 1804. Samuel Cutter died in 1805, several months after signing the deed of manumission. It was not until April 1811 that William Bloomfield, the executor of Cutter's estate, would complete the manumission process by obtaining a certificate of manumission for Joe from Middlesex County officials.
Based on the information provided in the manumission documents, Joe was born circa 1779 to 1784. - Keywords
