- Biographical Description

Jane Oppie was a Black woman, born around 1784, who was enslaved by Joseph Story of West Windsor, NJ. She was the wife of Thomas Oppie, who was also enslaved by the same man. She probably was the mother of the three enslaved children in the Story household.
Joseph Story died intestate (without a will) circa 1811. Following the death of Joseph Story, the administrators of his estate (Elizabeth Story and Joseph Story, probably the son of the deceased man) manumitted Jane and her husband Thomas Oppie. The Storys manumitted Jane on May 2, 1812. She was aged 28 at the time of manumission. - Keywords
