- Biographical Description

Thomas Oppie was a Black man, born around 1777, who was enslaved by Joseph Story of West Windsor, NJ. He was the husband of Jane Oppie, who was also enslaved by the same man. He probably was the father of the three enslaved children in the Story household.
Joseph Story died intestate (without a will) circa 1811. Following the death of Joseph Story, the administrators of his estate (Elizabeth Story and Joseph Story, probably the son of the deceased man) manumitted Thomas Oppie and his wife Jane. The Storys manumitted Thomas Oppie on May 2, 1812. He was aged 35 at the time of manumission. - Keywords
