Manumission of Peter Furman (certificate dated 1814-08-16, deed dated 1814-08-16), recorded in Manumissions and Removals Book, p. 148-149. Middlesex County (N.J.) Records, 1688-1929, Vol. XI (MC 784.1). Special Collections and University Archives, Rutgers University Libraries.
- Event Description
-
Peter Furman, aged 21 to 40 , was manumitted by Benjamin Marsh, a resident of Falls, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The manumission took place in Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey.
The certificate of manumission described Peter Furman thus: "slave named Peter Furman (being a man given him the said Benjamin Marsh by the will of his father John Marsh of the said Township of Woodbridge)." The certificate was signed by the Overseers of the Poor of Woodbridge (S. S. Barron, Richard Marsh) and Justices of the Peace for Middlesex County (Richard Marsh, Andrew Elston) on August 16, 1814. The document stated that Peter Furman was examined in court and met the eligibility requirements for manumission in New Jersey, i.e. the person was 21 to 40 years old and was "sound in mind and not under any bodily incapacity" of obtaining a livelihood.
The deed of manumission was executed on the same day, August 16, 1814, by Benjamin Marsh, witnessed by Andrew Elston and Andrew Marsh, and then notarized by Asa Runyon.
These documents were recorded by the Middlesex County Clerk (William P. Deare) on August 17, 1814. - Event Type
