- Biographical Description
- Sableak was a woman of African descent who lived in New Jersey in the late 18th and early 19th century. In 1799 she gave birth to a daughter named Mary. Presumably, Sableak was enslaved at the time of Mary's birth because Mary was recorded as an enslaved child in the household of enslaver Dr. Joseph W. Hagaman. By 1812, archival documents refer to Sableak as "a free mulattress," suggesting that she gained freedom sometime between 1799 and 1812.
