- Biographical Description
- Nance was an enslaved Black woman who resided in Middlesex County, NJ, in the early 19th century. She gave birth to a daughter named Jude around 1801. In 1813, Jude's enslaver Simon Hillyer moved to New York City, and Nance appeared in court to provide her consent for Jude to move out of the state of New Jersey with Simon Hillyer. Nance also testified that Jude's father was deceased by 1813. The legal document related to the move suggests that Nance did not accompany her daughter to New York, and it is not certain whether Nance was enslaved by the Hillyer family or another family in the area.
