- Biographical Description
- Issabel, daughter of Kate, was born on March 10, 1808, and was enslaved by John Toan of South Amboy, NJ. Under New Jersey's gradual abolition law, she had the status of a slave for a term of 21 years. This meant she was bound to serve her enslaver until age 21, and then she would become eligible for emancipation. In 1812, John Toan moved from the state of New Jersey to Cayuga County, New York, and took Kate and Issabel with him. This move may have delayed Issabel's emancipation because New York's gradual abolition law required a longer term of service; Black women in New York became eligible for emancipation at age 25.
