- Biographical Description
- Mary was born on February 15, 1799, and was enslaved by Joseph W. Hagaman of Princeton in the township of West Windsor, NJ. Her mother was Sableak. Presumably, Sableak was enslaved at the time when Mary was born, but by 1812, archival documents describe Sableak as "a free mulattress." In 1812, Joseph W. Hagaman moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, and took Mary with him. Sableak appeared in court to provide her consent for Mary to move to Ohio, but it is unclear whether Sableak also moved to Ohio at the same time.
