- Biographical Description
- Rozenah was one of the victims of Jacob Van Wickle's slave trading ring in Middlesex County, New Jersey, in 1818. She was born in New Jersey to an enslaved mother named Rachel around January 1818. Under New Jersey's gradual abolition law, she had the status of a slave for a term of 21 years. This meant she was bound to serve her enslaver until age 21, and then she would become eligible for emancipation. However, when she was only 6 weeks old, her mother Rachel was forced to leave New Jersey for Louisiana together with Rozenah, effectively depriving Rozenah of her right to freedom at age 21.
